Without the sideshow of illustrious alumni and the distraction of sharing the stage with "Project Runway" stars, Honolulu Community College’s fashion technology students win back the spotlight with "Le Reve (The Dream)," the annual fashion show highlighted by collections from graduating seniors.

The show takes place at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the school’s Sand Island Marine Education & Training Center. Here’s a look at the eight collections:
» Jessica Cabal: Casual wear in sedate whites and grays with a splash of yellow belie Cabal’s colorful influences. She admits to being under the spell of the clashing swords, demons, witches and wizards of video games, animation and anime. Look carefully and you can see many a costumed heroine or the curve of a blade echoed in her lines.
» Meredith Cliff: One of two swimwear designers, Cliff said she always found it difficult to find swimsuits that fit her curvy body, so she set out to remedy the situation with her summer 2012 collection, "Birds of a Feather." Included are bottoms that connect back to front with ties, instead of elastic, to avoid "muffin top" pinching and squeezing. Her feather prints reflect her love of nature.
» Carmen Lee: With a design identity that’s still evolving, Lee dubbed her dark collection of pleather separates and dresses with chain details "Identity." Her woman warrior looks feature figure-hugging princess lines in silhouettes that suggest an equal measure of strength and femininity. Lee aims to take a break after graduating to travel the world and see fashion as expressed in other locations before finding her place in the industry.
» Jessica O’Neill: The swimwear designer gravitates to water, having been raised in sunny Florida and now calling Hawaii home. She enrolled at HCC intending to study merchandising but was won over by the designing life and the thrill of "bringing something to life, starting from a drawing. A couple of days later, you have something ready to wear in your hand." Her line, "Creations by Midnight," includes an array of sunny orange suits and blue suits suitable for the beach or lounging poolside.
» Ryan Ota: The designer’s "Thought Bubbles" offer a contemporary take on menswear, with style lines and contrasting fabric that offer well-conceived, fashion-conscious details without adding clutter to classic silhouettes. Although he said he found his way into the fashion program by accident, there’s no doubt he has a natural instinct for this world.
» Ramie Mariko Sagisi: A fan of feminine, demure Japanese fashion, Sagisi has created a romantic, free-flowing boho collection of dresses and separates in cream colors, with lace details, suede-textured fabric and pleating that take it a notch or two above a basic tunic, pair of shorts or spaghetti-strap dress. Her collection is represented by garments she likes to wear, and the simple beauty conveyed by her designs will likely win her a following among the girliest of girls.
» Stephanie Sanders: Animal prints served up in simple, casual shapes comprise the designer’s "Stiletto" collection of separates and dresses for everyday wear. Sanders said she’s been designing ever since she was a child, though she didn’t have a name for her reconstruction efforts or her disdain for poorly sewn commercial wear. It wasn’t until she started creating her own club costumes that she decided to consider fashion design as a profession.
» Rose Wolfe: A love of bold prints and retro style led to her "Lock & Key" collection of dresses and separates. They incorporate a black-and-white, lock-and-key print with classic 1950s and ’60s lines, punched up with jewel-tone blouses. "I’m kind of a simple person, so I wanted to make something that would be fun, easy to wear and casual," said the designer.
