Galdiano third in California
Maryknoll eighth-grader Mariel Galdiano tied for third at the American Junior Golf Association’s Under Armour/Gary Woodland Championship, which ended Saturday in Patterson, Calif.
Galdiano shot 73-70 to finish three shots out of first at Diablo Grande Golf & Country Club. Competing were 69 boys and 27 girls, ages 12-18, from eight states and six foreign countries.
‘Iolani senior Lorens Chan, who will try to win his third state high school championship in two weeks, was invited to play in the second annual Junior Invitational in Graniteville, S.C. It brought together 26 of the top 30-ranked junior boys.
Chan opened with 76-73, then shot 83 in Sunday’s final round to tie for 45th.
Chan is ranked 29th and headed to UCLA on a golf scholarship in the fall.
Women’s Open qualifier close
The entry deadline for Hawaii’s U.S. Women’s Open sectional qualifier is Wednesday. The sectional will be May 21 at Waialae Country Club, with at least one woman advancing to this year’s U.S. Women’s Open, July 5-8 at Blackwolf Run in Kohler, Wis.
Participants can register at usga.org. Last year, Pearl City 12-year-old Mariel Galdiano qualified for the U.S. Open at the Hawaii sectional.
Hyundai gives to charities
The Hyundai Tournament of Champions, played at Kapalua in January, gave more than $277,000 to Maui charities. Since its inception in 1999, the tournament and the host organizations have donated more than $4 million to Maui Community Charities.
Primary 2012 beneficiaries are Boy Scouts of America, Maui County Council, Friends of the Children’s Justice Center, Hale Makua Health Services, J. Walter Cameron Center, Ka Lima O Maui and Lahainaluna High School Foundation.
Balance Point back in Hawaii
Balance Point Golf Schools is back in Hawaii for the 18th year, offering programs at Ko Olina Golf Club starting this week and running through May 8. The school has been ranked among Golf Magazine’s Top 25 twice.
Half-day, one-day and multiday golf schools are offered, covering full swing, short game, putting and mental game instruction.
