Thursday, it was Dax. Friday, it was little brother’s turn.
Finn McGill, 12, dazzled in one of the more exciting heats of the day during the Hawaii Surfing Association’s state championships at Ala Moana Bowls. The stylish regular-footer caught two waves that offered a nice barrel at the takeoff. He then finished them up with a series of critical top to bottom snaps.
“I feel really good,” said Finn. “It was really fun out there. It was kind of windy, but there were super long waves and some barrels. My strategy was to get two good ones and then go bigger.”
On Thursday, Dax, 14, pulled off two nine-plus rides to move into the finals of the girls 12-13 shortboard competition.
Friday’s second day of competition featured 13 finals in shortboard, longboard and bodyboard divisions in 2- to 3-foot waves throughout the day. The results for all of the finals will be announced at the awards ceremony today at Magic Island.
Another one of the day’s standouts was Ewa Beach’s Kaulana Apo, 14, whose goofy-foot style seemed to blend in well at Bowls.
“I just wanted to stay busy, get two early ones then get a good set and feel it,” Apo said. “I am feeling good, I got a couple. I got a good barrel on the outside of one which was probably my best wave. This is definitely a contest I want to do good in because it is the qualifier to go to California.
The top six qualifiers from each island advanced to the event. The finalists get slots into the Surfing America championships, held at Trestles near San Clemente, Calif.
Keanu Malama, 16, of Kekaha, Kauai, was one of the competitors making the flight to Oahu for the contest. Malama was in the bodyboard junior men’s 16 and over division.
“I am pretty stoked to come over here,” said Malama. “It was pretty good out there. I caught a nice barrel on one. I was just trying to catch a lot of waves and do a lot of tricks.”
