Arrest aided by empty gas tank
Police arrested an armed-robbery suspect who led officers on a high-speed chase from the North Shore on Wednesday morning that ended when his vehicle ran out of gas near Waipahu High School.
Police said the incident began when two men reported being held up at gunpoint in Pupukea at 2:42 a.m. The robber drove away toward Haleiwa Beach Park.
Officers caught up to the suspect near Waipahu High School when his car ran out of gas, police said. The suspect tried to run, but officers captured him at 3:07 a.m.
Police recovered a handgun at the scene. The man was arrested on suspicion of first-degree robbery, felony possession of a weapon, reckless driving, refusing to stop, resisting order to stop and driving without a license.
Golf cart accident kills man, 70
A Japanese national said to be about 70 years old died and a 34-year-old man was injured Wednesday when the golf cart they were in fell into a ditch at Waialae Country Club.
An Emergency Medical Services chief said people on the course performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation on the older man until paramedics arrived.
He was taken to the Queen’s Medical Center in critical condition and was later pronounced dead.
The other man was taken in stable condition by ambulance to a hospital.
The accident happened about noon Wednesday.
