The so-called "alliance" is dead, and the Mountain West Conference will announce another membership alteration today.
But the University of Hawaii remains committed to a hybrid plan of placing its football team in the MWC and most of its programs in the Big West Conference.
For now.
"The hybrid model works very well for us right now," UH athletic director Jim Donovan said.
He added: "The only constant is change."
In separate news conferences scheduled for today, Utah State and San Jose State will announce their acceptance as all-sports members of the Mountain West beginning on July 1, 2013. Boise State and San Diego State are set to leave the MWC a day earlier.
UH officially secedes from the Western Athletic Conference this June 30 after a 36-year membership. UH would be the MWC’s lone football-only member the next two academic years.
"There are no discussions about our other sports moving to the Mountain West at this time," Donovan said.
Donovan said the Big West is a good fit geographically and competitively for UH’s non-football sports.
With Conference USA also increasing its membership, the proposed alliance between C-USA and MWC will no longer be pursued.
In related news, the UH football team will make four appearances on national cable networks this season.
NBC Sports Network, previously known as Versus, will televise Warriors home games against Nevada on Sept. 22 and Boise State on Nov. 10.
CBS Sports Network will televise the road game against San Diego State on Oct. 6.
ESPN2 will televise the road game against Air Force on Nov. 16.
