Kamehameha wasn’t about to follow fellow-Interscholastic League of Honolulu member Punahou’s lead.
After watching the Buffanblu lose to Hilo on Tuesday, the Warriors scored in the top of the first inning and never trailed in a 7-3 victory over Kaiser in the Division I opening round of the Wally Yonamine Foundation/HHSAA Baseball State Championships at Les Murakami Stadium.
Moku Kukonu went 2-for-3 with four RBIs and Ali’i Pedrina doubled and scored two runs to lead Kamehameha (15-3).
The Warriors, who lost in a one-game playoff to Mid-Pacific for the ILH championship, will meet fourth-seeded Baldwin in the lone Division I quarterfinal game at ‘Iolani today at 3:30 p.m.
Pedrina doubled to start the game and scored on a fielder’s choice after knocking the ball out of catcher Makana Lyman’s glove.
Kukonu hit a two-run single in the third to give Kamehameha a 3-0 lead.
Kaiser starter Royce Kuromoto allowed three runs on six hits in three innings before he was lifted for a reliever to start the fourth.
Kukonu walked with the bases loaded and Jason Murakami added a two-run double in the fourth to give the Warriors a comfortable 7-0 lead.
Kamehameha starter Keenan Lum tossed four shutout innings, giving up just two hits and one walk with five strikeouts before he was lifted for a Warriors reliever.
With a 7-0 lead, Kamehameha was able to pull its ace, allowing Lum the possibility of pitching another complete game in the tournament.
It opened the door for Kaiser as Jake Torigoe walked with the bases loaded and Lyman followed with a two-run single to cut the lead to 7-3.
Kaiser put the first two men on base in the sixth on two Kamehameha errors, but Zach Kaohu pitched out of the jam without giving up a run.
Kelan Yoshioka retired all six batters he faced over the last two innings for Kaiser (10-7), which will play Punahou on Thursday at 2 p.m. at Hans L’Orange Park in a consolation game.
