"Is it just me, or are all the crazy drivers on the road today?"
Is it just me, or do I hear that every day? We all probably do.
It’s been a good while since I raved about my traffic pet peeves and allowed readers to do so, too. I’ll pat myself on the back for the self-restraint, but I think I’ll take some time to mark off some peeves of my own. I hope to hear from you all about your own, too, and you can sound off in next week’s column.
» I really hate slow drivers on the left side of the roads and freeways. It’s called the fast lane for a reason. But every day I see huge rigs and slow drivers slowing everything down.
Chapter 5 of the Hawaii Drivers Manual under "Traffic Laws and Regulations" explicitly states, "When moving slower than other traffic, you should drive in the extreme right lane."
This should be common knowledge, but anecdotal evidence shows that most people don’t seem to know this. It’s fine and dandy if you need or want to drive slower, but don’t do so at the expense of everyone else behind you.
» I almost got rear-ended this week. I was in the center lane on Kapiolani Boulevard driving through an intersection, and I was signaling a switch to the left lane after the intersection.
But a car behind me switched behind me while he was still in the intersection. He honked at me as if I cut him off, passed me on the right and gave me stink eye.
Obviously he didn’t read the driver’s manual, which states (with the caps lock on), "NEVER CHANGE LANES WHEN APPROACHING OR MOVING THROUGH INTERSECTIONS AND CROSSWALKS."
Sure, it’s not a catchy bumper sticker, but I’d use it.
» This next one is for pedestrians. Pedestrians always have the right of way, of course. But they should never dash into an intersection when the light is already counting down. It’s against the law, and you could get cited.
There are always cars wanting to turn, and there’s a reason why pedestrians should not walk across the street once the light starts to count down. It’s only to tell pedestrians already in the crosswalk to hustle, not for latecomers.
I know. I hate waiting to cross the street, too. It sucks when there’s still 20 seconds on the clock. But if I ran into the crosswalk, all those cars would have to wait for me because I decided not to follow safe pedestrian practices.
It’s your turn. Email me your peeves and maybe we can get a good handle on what some of the worst, most common practices are. Tailgaters? Bad merging? No signals? Keep your complaints short so I can try to get them published.
I’m sure I’ll hear from many of you about your peeves. It can’t be just me, right?
