Surfer falls from board, dies
A Keaau man apparently drowned Thursday while surfing at the "Birdshacks" spot at Pohoiki Beach in lower Puna, the Hawaii County Fire Department said.
Police identified the man as Nathan Keliikuli, 42.
Lifeguards saw Keliikuli fall off his board while he was surfing at about 10 a.m., officials said. He reportedly fell and hit his jaw on his board and did not come to the surface. Lifeguards brought him to shore and tried to resuscitate him. He was taken to Hilo Medical Center in critical condition and pronounced dead at 11:13 a.m.
Teen arrested in laser incident
Police arrested a 15-year-old boy for allegedly shining a laser at a police officer Wednesday night in Mililani.
Police said the officer was driving near Kamehameha Highway and Waihonu Street at about 9:50 p.m. when a laser beam was flashed in his face and eyes. The officer found the boy nearby with a laser device and arrested him.
