KEAAU » Kapolei’s Devin Jenkins is saving his best for last.
Jenkins pulled up before finishing the 100- and 200-meter races at the Island Movers/HHSAA track and field championships at Keaau on Friday. He still won both of his trials races easily, but his time of 11.05 in the 100 was nowhere near Shane Victorino’s 10.8 mark from 1999. Jenkins has run a 10.47 this year, but wanted to take it easy in the cold rain during the trials. He was walking over the line in the 200 while those behind him sprinted to catch him.
"I was hurt last year and everyone knows it," Jenkins said. "I wanted to take it easy today and save it all up for tomorrow. I felt strong, and I felt fast. I think tomorrow might be a special day."
Even with pulling up, Jenkins won both events he entered, beating Hanalani’s Jonathan Melton by 8 hundreths of a second. Melton, who was running in a different heat, tied Jenkins in the 200 meters with a 22.3 clocking.
Perhaps the biggest individual battle is shaping up to be between Pearl City sophomore Diamond Briscoe and Christian Academy junior Raion Black. Black had the edge in the 100, when Briscoe was caught unprepared for the starter’s gun. Black ran the distance in 12.3 seconds, just over June-Anne Lusk’s state meet record of 12.25. Briscoe came home in 12.6, the seventh-best time. Briscoe beat Black in the 400 meters, 58.84 to 59.41 but Black has the edge in the 200, 26.28 seconds to Briscoe’s 26.39. Both sprinters held a little back on Friday.
"I wanted to get a good time each time to have a good lane," Briscoe said. "I got a bad block in the 100, but I felt fast enough. I can’t have that happen (today).
Easy trials winners were Brianne Ball of ‘Iolani in the 800, Carmen Garson-Shumway of Hilo with 5 minutes, 10.46 seconds in the 1,500, and Dakota Grossman of Seabury Hall with an 11:19.9 in the 3,000 meters.
Lia Galdeira of Konawaena sped to a 14.73 clocking in the 100-meter hurdles and had the best triple jump of the day with 36 feet, 2.25 inches. Kapolei’s Charlinda Ioane and Hannah Sherrill of Le Jardin predictably split the shot put and discus, with Ioane putting the shot 42-10 and Sherrill flinging the discus 152-06. Both will be challenging state meet records today.
Pasoni Tasini of Baldwin was the only boy to double up, claiming the top marks in the shot put with a 54.01 effort and the discus with a 171-04.
Lauren Arakawa of ‘Iolani and Michael Teves of King Kekaulike have already won state titles.
Arakawa, a senior, cleared five feet in the girls high jump to beat out Savannah Marrotte of Kamehameha and Christine Tsai of Punahou. Arakawa’s ILH rivals matched her at five feet, but had more attempts.
Teves and Lucas Zarro were also tied in the boys pole vault, but the medal went to the King Kekaulike senior with an effort of 14 feet.
