Former Arizona State defensive tackle David Moala said he has accepted a scholarship offer from the Hawaii football team.
Moala will play for Mount San Antonio College this coming season, complete work on his associate’s degree next spring, and join the Warriors as part of the 2013 recruiting class. After that, he will have three seasons of eligibility.
Two former highly recruited defensive backs — Demar Dorsey, who signed with Michigan in 2010, and Darren Myles, who played at Tennessee as a freshman in 2009 — have contacted UH and indicated they want to play for the Warriors. But both are in the discussion stage. Both need to clear academic hurdles before being eligible to transfer.
The path is clearer for Moala.
UH-BYU game moved to Friday, Sept. 28
The University of Hawaii’s football game at Brigham Young has been moved to Sept. 28, a Friday, the schools announced Wednesday.
The switch from Sept. 29 was made to accommodate ESPN, which will air the game at 2 p.m. Hawaii time.
The move means that at least five of UH’s 12 games will be shown on networks this season.
UH’s Nov. 16 game at Air Force also will be a Friday contest for ESPN.

"I’m on the right track now," Moala said. "I should be done (with the requirements needed to transfer) in the spring."
As a senior at Serra High (Gardena, Calif.) in 2011, Moala was ranked as the nation’s 97th best defensive tackle. SuperPrep listed Moala as the 110th-best prospect overall in California. He turned down offers from Miami, Colorado, Colorado State, San Diego State and San Jose State to sign with Arizona State in February 2011.
Moala redshirted in 2011. In January, first-year ASU coach Todd Graham dismissed Moala for violating what was termed "team standards."
"I made an immature mistake," Moala said. "Coach Graham was coming into the program. He needed to do what he needed to do. I still have respect for the coaches there. I still have love for them. Things didn’t go as planned."
Instead, Moala went back to one of his initial options. As UCLA’s offensive coordinator, Norm Chow, now the Warriors’ head coach, was recruiting Moala.
"I’ve known coach Chow for a while," Moala said. "He was recruiting me when I was in high school. He’s a good guy."
Southern California and Louisiana State were among the schools that showed interest after Moala left ASU.
"Coach Chow pulled the trigger," Moala said. "He made the offer. I’m going to be a Warrior."
Moala said he is 6 feet 2 and 305 pounds. He has relatives in Hawaii. He recently attended family and church functions in Hawaii.
"I love it there," he said. "What’s not to like about Hawaii?"
Dorsey and Myles also have expressed affinity for Hawaii. Dorsey, who was a five-star defensive back in high school, did not meet the NCAA requirements to enroll at Michigan. He played at Grand Rapids College in 2011. If he earns his associate’s degree this summer, he will have three seasons of eligibility.
Tennessee dismissed Myles in 2010 in the aftermath of his arrest for his alleged role in a fight. Myles, who is completing work on an associate’s degree, will have two years to play two NCAA seasons.
