Hawaii island officials are holding a public meeting Monday about the state’s new requirements for renewing a driver’s license or permit.
The meeting will be from 5 to 6 p.m. in the Aupuni Center Conference Room, 101 Pauahi St., in Hilo.
It will be the first in a series of meetings in the county to inform the public about the new requirements, reduce waiting times, and ensure that everyone who shows up to get a new license or permit has the correct documents.
All county driver’s license offices began implementing stricter rules March 5 to get or renew a license or permit under state law.
Anyone applying for an original Hawaii driver’s license or a learner’s permit must show proof of identity, legal presence and their Social Security number.
Proof of legal presence is not required from those applying for a duplicate driver’s license or permit.
The law was changed by Act 38, signed into law in 2010 by former Gov. Linda Lingle.
Documents to prove legal presence in the U.S. include a birth certificate, U.S. passport, a certificate of citizenship or naturalization, resident alien card, or a valid foreign passport with a visa and form I-94.
Documents presented for proof of identity, legal presence or Social Security number must be valid originals or certified copies. Photo or fax copies are not acceptable.
For a list of acceptable documents, visit hawaii.gov/dot/hawaiis-legal-presence-law.
Legal immigrants and those temporarily in the U.S. can only get a license up to the end of their authorized stay in the country.
The meeting place in Hilo is accessible to people with disabilities, but to request accommodations, call 961-8021.
