Snorkeling tourist hospitalized after rescue
A 45-year-old female tourist was taken to a hospital in critical condition Sunday after she was pulled from the ocean in front of the Sheraton Maui Resort & Spa while snorkeling, Maui fire officials said.
Other snorkelers brought the woman to shore, and Maui firefighters were called at 1:30 p.m. They arrived to find Sheraton employees performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation, fire officials said.
Fire officials did not immediately know where the woman was from, but said she was a visitor.
Boy nearly drowns in rec center’s pool
A 4-year-old boy was taken to a hospital in extremely critical condition Saturday afternoon after an apparent near drowning in a public pool.
The boy was swimming at a city recreation center pool in Ewa Beach.
Paramedics arrived at the scene at about 6 p.m. The boy was transported to Kapiolani Medical Center for Women & Children.
Man flees after gunpoint robbery attempt
Police are looking for a man who tried to rob another man at gunpoint Sunday in Pearl City.
Police said the victim, 41, was walking to his car at Pearl City Plaza, 97-719 Kamehameha Highway, at about 10 a.m. when another man stuck a black handgun in his chest and demanded money. The victim didn’t think the gun was real, and the two men fought.
The victim was hit in the face and scratched on the arm.
The gunman got into a waiting black pickup and left. He did not take any money or property.
Police described the gunman as dark-skinned, in his 30s, about 6 feet tall and about 220 pounds with a muscular build. He was wearing a black hoodie and blue denim jeans.
Gun threat against 3 ends with arrest
A 55-year-old man was arrested after he allegedly threatened two teens and another man with a gun Saturday night in Nanakuli.
Police said the man was arguing outside his home at about 11:55 p.m. with the two boys, 15 and 17, and a 33-year-old man when he placed the handgun against the neck of one of the victims, causing an abrasion. The man then threatened the group with the gun, police said.
Officers arrested him for investigation of terroristic threatening, assault and three firearm offenses, including being a felon in possession of a firearm.
Teen caught running away from house
Police arrested a 13-year-old boy on suspicion of first-degree burglary after a sleeping 51-year-old Kalihi man awoke to the sound of his sliding glass door opening.
He saw two boys running out of his house at 5:45 a.m. Sunday and tried to chase them, police said.
Officers who responded arrested the 13-year-old boy at 6:09 a.m. after he was positively identified by the resident, police said.
Sword snatched from man after struggle
A 20-year-old man punched an 18-year-old man he was meeting at a Kahuku park Saturday afternoon, then wrestled away the younger man’s newly purchased sword, police said.
The assault happened at 12:30 p.m., and the suspect was later found and arrested for investigation of second-degree robbery at 9:26 p.m., police said.
The victim and suspect are acquaintances, police said. The 18-year-old man was waiting for the older man at the park when the 20-year-old showed up and punched him without provocation, police said.
After a brief struggle the suspect wrestled away a sword that the younger man had recently bought, police said.
The suspect fled on foot and was later located and identified by the victim, police said.
Man in custody for shoplifting stabs self
A 50-year-old man critically injured himself Sunday with a pair of scissors while being detained for shoplifting in Kaimuki, authorities said.
Police said the man stabbed himself.
Paramedics responded to a Waialae Avenue address shortly before 4 p.m. and took the man to a hospital, an Emergency Medical Services supervisor said.
