Maui police have identified a suspected car thief whom an officer shot and killed Tuesday in a Kihei hotel parking lot as Marshall M.K. Langford, 31, of Wailuku.
The officer, an 18-year department veteran, killed Langford after Langford pointed a handgun at him Tuesday morning, police said.
Acting Capt. Peter DeLima of the Criminal Investigation Division said police are continuing to search for a second suspect who had gone into the hotel earlier.
Police officials believe they know his identity but would not release any information.
DeLima said both men arrived at the Mana Kai Maui Hotel in a stolen car, and one of them went inside "to do what at the hotel, we don’t know."
Police had received a report of a stolen vehicle at the hotel, and when officers arrived at 11:20 a.m., they found a man inside the car.
Police said as the man, whom they identified as Langford, tried to drive away, he pointed a handgun at an officer.
"The officer responded by firing his weapon," a Glock .40-caliber semiautomatic, and fatally shot Langford, police said.
DeLima did not know how many shots the officer fired, and police would not release further information.
Maui County spokesman Rod Antone said the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.
The officer has been placed on administrative leave.
DeLima also would not elaborate on who reported the vehicle stolen.
Langford has a criminal history of car break-ins, drug and misdemeanor convictions, and petty misdemeanor theft convictions from 2004 to 2006.
His latest convictions were for three cases of unauthorized entry into a motor vehicle in 2006.
At that time he was also convicted of fourth-degree criminal property damage and third- and fourth-degree theft.
Hundreds of guests at the beachside hotel were evacuated as authorities investigated.
General manager Winston Chinn said several hundred guests weren’t able to return to their rooms during the afternoon while police were on the scene.
Chinn says employees reported hearing gunshots, but there are conflicting accounts of how many shots.
The investigation is still continuing, police said.
