Manoa chancellor designate Tom Apple is scheduled to begin work at the University of Hawaii on June 18, but when he will start calling the shots of the school’s membership in the Mountain West and Big West Conferences is undecided.
UH president M.R.C. Greenwood, who has represented the Warriors on the MWC Board of Directors since 2011, said, "It is a question of timing with what’s going on right now in the conferences, what would be best and what would be the right time."
Outgoing Manoa chancellor Virginia S. Hinshaw has represented UH in the Western Athletic Conference and the Big West Board of Directors. She leaves at the end of June.
A December 2011 report by an NCAA peer review team recommended UH, "be represented by your campus head (chancellor) at all athletic conferences as soon as possible."
In response, Greenwood has said she was directed by the UH Board of Regents to represent UH in the transition from the WAC to the MWC. She said her intention is for the chancellor to "assume responsibility for representation of UH after the completion of the transition."
A Board of Regents spokesman did not respond to requests for comment.
UH is scheduled to join the MWC on July 1.
Since Evan Dobelle became UH president in 2001, the Manoa chancellor has usually represented the athletic department in conference voting.
