Police seek driver who plowed into mo-ped
A driver who critically injured a mo-ped rider in McCully fled the scene and is being sought by police.
The hit-and-run accident happened at Isenberg and Date streets at 9:32 p.m. Wednesday.
Police said a silver Nissan, headed makai on Isenberg Street at “a high rate of speed,” made a left turn into the mo-ped, which was headed mauka on Isenberg Street.
The 38-year-old man driving the mo-ped suffered “critical, massive head injuries,” police said. Paramedics took him to the Queen’s Medical Center.
Police said speed may have been a factor in the crash. The mo-ped rider was not wearing a helmet.
Body found near park in Central Oahu
Police found the partially decomposed body of a man Thursday near a Waipio park and believe the body might belong to a missing man.
Police said the body of the 63-year-old man was found at 10:40 a.m. in brush surrounding Patsy T. Mink Central Oahu Regional Park. There were no signs of foul play.
The Honolulu Medical Examiner’s Office did not release the man’s identity. An autopsy is scheduled for today.
Diver’s drowning death ruled an accident
Christopher Nee, whose body was found in Kailua Bay after he disappeared while free-diving last weekend, drowned, the Honolulu Medical Examiner’s Office said.
Nee’s death was ruled an accident.
Nee, 54, went free-diving with a friend at 4 p.m. Saturday but didn’t come out at the agreed-upon time. Firefighters and lifeguards found Nee’s body Sunday morning in about 20 feet of water and about 400 yards from Castles Beach.
House fire was arson, fire investigators say
A fire that destroyed a Papipi Drive home in Ewa Beach on Tuesday afternoon appears to have been intentionally set, Honolulu fire investigators determined.
The blaze caused an estimated $300,000 in damage to the three-bedroom house and its contents, including a boat and a truck, said Capt. Terry Seelig, Honolulu Fire Department spokesman. The fire caused an additional $20,000 in damage to two houses adjoining the house, as well as two cars near the property, he said. Seelig said it is believed the fire started in the house’s carport.
In an unrelated fire that happened in Ewa six hours later, Seelig said investigators concluded they cannot determine the cause of a 50-acre brush fire at a vacant field at Fort Weaver and Renton roads. The blaze, which began at about 9:30 p.m., came within 100 feet of Ewa by Gentry homes.
