Man shot by police had pellet gun, shotgun
The man shot and killed by police in Kihei on Tuesday had pointed a pellet gun that looked like a semiautomatic pistol at officers and had a sawed-off shotgun within reach, a Maui County official said.
Police said Marshall Langford, 31, was killed in the Mana Kai Maui resort parking lot as he tried to flee in a stolen blue Chevy Impala. He aimed what looked like a gun at an officer who shot him.
Deputy Corporation Counsel Moana Lutey said Langford’s actions required the officer to use appropriate force.
"Mr. Langford pointed what was perceived to be a firearm at officers," she said. "Lethal force is only used when a suspect poses a threat of serious physical harm to an officer."
County spokesman Rod Antone said the pellet gun looked very much like a Glock handgun.
The Police Department released photos of the sawed-off shotgun and pellet gun Friday.
The guns and a glass smoking pipe were found in the vehicle after police executed a search warrant Wednesday. Lutey said the shotgun was found between the seats, near the car’s front console. She did not know whether it was loaded.
The Maui News reported Langford’s family claimed he didn’t have a gun and was reaching for a cellphone.
Teenager flees after shooting couple
Police were searching for a gunman who shot a man and woman Friday night as they were making a nighttime deposit at the Bank of Hawaii on Farrington Highway in Waipahu.
An EMS radio report said a 40-year-old woman suffered a head wound and a superficial chest wound and that a 39-year-old man was hit in the shoulder, arm and chest areas.
A Department of Emergency Medical Services supervisor reported the two were in serious condition.
Initial police radio reports said a teenager approached the couple from behind at about 7:45 p.m., fired shots at them and then fled on foot on Farrington Highway.
Tina Laupola, who was having dinner nearby, says she heard five gunshots.
Two teenagers who were in a flower shop nearby said they heard two shots, ran outside thinking they were the sounds of fireworks and saw muzzle flashes and a gunman shooting at the car that was leaving the parking lot.
The gunman, who was wearing a mask, ran toward Waipahu Depot Road, the teenagers said.
Police said the victims drove to Max’s of Manila.
