Baron helps USA to wheelchair finals
Punahou senior Shelby Baron helped Team USA to its first BNP Paribas World Team Cup final since 2003, but the juniors team fell to the Netherlands on Saturday and finished second in the wheelchair tennis tournament. The Cup was played at the Olympic Tennis Centre in Seoul.
Baron, Chris Herman and Kate Stuteville were trying to become the first U.S. juniors to win a title since 2000. The Americans were seeded sixth and lost to the second-seeded Dutch squad, 2-0.
The runner-up finish was the best of the U.S. squads. The quads team took third, the women sixth and the men seventh.
Baron, headed to the University of Hawaii, recently received her third major scholarship, collecting the $2,500 USTA Serves Eve Kraft College Scholarship. Kraft was the first varsity coach at Princeton and founded the USTA Center for Education and Recreational Tennis. Baron is one of two high school seniors nationwide to receive the scholarship. Earlier she received the Althea Gibson Leadership Award and AXA Achievement Scholarship. Baron also collected two Hawaii Community Foundation scholarships.
‘Iolani’s Darin Poei and Kahuku’s Josephine Tueller were awarded $8,000 USTA Serves College Education Scholarships, given to seniors who have “excelled academically, demonstrated community service and participated in an organized tennis program.”
