Treasurer accused of stealing from union
A Hawaii man has been charged with embezzling $83,293 from the mail carriers union at the time he was the union’s treasurer.
David M. Ing took the money from the Hawaii branch of the National Association of Letter Carriers for his own use from Jan. 31 to Dec. 2, 2011, according to a grand jury indictment last week in U.S. District Court in Hawaii.
His initial appearance was set for today before Judge Kevin Chang.
Ing also made several withdrawals below a certain amount to avoid federal reporting requirements for the banks, according to the indictment.
Family of boy killed in crash seeks funds
The parents of a 4-year-old boy killed by a hit-and-run driver in March have opened a fundraising account to help the family.
Donations can be made to the "Ashton M. Brown Memorial Fund" at any Bank of Hawaii branch.
Members of the Brown family were sitting at a bus stop on Farrington Highway in Makaha on March 28 when an alleged drunken driver crashed a vehicle into the bus stop, killing Ashton Brown and injuring four other family members.
Police arrested Potasi Uta Jr., 44, who was later indicted on charges of negligent homicide, four counts of negligent injury and fleeing the scene of a crash.
Man arrested over threats
Hawaii County police arrested a 51-year-old Kona man Wednesday in connection with alleged threatening comments directed at Kona Community Hospital.
Kona patrol officers went to the hospital at 9:24 a.m. Wednesday after receiving a report from staff that a man had made threatening phone calls to "shoot up" the hospital. Because of the phone call, access to the hospital was restricted until 11:30 a.m.
Tori Dulemba, executive assistant to the hospital’s chief executive, said the restrictions lasted less than three hours and included tighter security at main entrances and locked side doors.
Police spokeswoman Chris Loos said there was no armed suspect at the hospital.
Police arrested the man at 12:40 p.m. at his home on suspicion of disorderly conduct for causing alarm at the hospital. He was released an hour later pending further investigation.
The public facility is a 94-bed, 24-hour emergency hospital.
Suspect sought in burglary, fire
Hawaii island police are asking for the public’s help in providing information about a burglary and fire Wednesday morning at a Keaau warehouse.
Police and fire units responded to a 5:19 a.m. alarm of a fire at a warehouse on Kipimana Street in Shipman Industrial Park.
Investigators found that someone had cut a chain on the front gate, made a hole in the rear of the building and removed a flatbed truck and heavy equipment.
Police are looking for a dark Ford four-door pickup truck seen in the area before the fire. Anyone with information is asked to call Detective Grant Todd at 961-2385.
