Chip Shots

First Tee offers camp

First Tee of Hawaii will have four day-camp sessions this summer at its Camp Homelani golf facility in Waialua. Camps are open to kids ages and run from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Sessions are June 4-8, June 11-5, July 9-13 and July 16-20. Instruction in golf, First Tee’s Life Skills curriculum, crafts and reading are included. The cost is $150 per child, with siblings an additional $125.

Scholarships are available for active duty military, national guard and reservists’ children. Equipment is provided, as well as lunch, healthy snacks, hat, shirt and educational materials.

For the first time, First Tee is also offering a Summer Camp at Hoakalei Country Club. It will be June 12-14, with classes running from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. each day. Members and invited friends between 6-17 are welcome.

Corpuz wins qualifier

Punahou eighth-grader Allisen Corpuz won Monday’s U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links qualifier at Kaanapali Kai. Corpuz shot a 3-under-par 67 in calm conditions to lead a group of four qualifiers from a field of 15.

Kula’s Marissa Uradomo (70) was second, followed by Hansol Koo (71) and Rose Huang (71). Those four advance to the national championship, June 18-23 at Neshanic Valley Golf Course in New Jersey.

Scores to play at Jr. Worlds

More than 40 Hawaii golfers qualified for this year’s Callaway Junior World Championships last weekend at Kaanapali Kai. Both medalists in the oldest age groups were playing up.

Kyosuke Kevin Hara (72—144), who is 13, won the Boys 15-18s by a shot over state high school champion John Oda and Skye Inakoshi. Those three, PJ Samiere and Tyler Munetake advanced.

Allisen Corpuz (76—149), who is 14, won the Girls 15-18 division by five shots, over Brittany Fan, Ciera Min, Marissa Uradomo and Nani Yanagi. All five qualified for San Diego. Corpuz won a Junior World title in 2004.

Other medalists: Mariel Galdiano (72—145) and Andrew Chin (74—145) in 13-14; Malia Nam (70—140) and Evan Kawai (74—154) in 11-12; Millburn Ho (77—132) and Taylor John McGerity (68—121) in 9-10, and; Minny Byun (87—156) and Ranson Kaya (94—159) in 7-8. Junior Worlds are July 10-13 in San Diego. Another 23 juniors qualified for the Pepsi Titan Little People’s Golf Tournament Saturday at Kaanapali. The nationals will be held June 18-20 in Illinois.

Kono, Kim are alternates

Honolulu’s Stephanie Kono and Kyung Kim, a former Maui resident, earned alternate status at last week’s U.S. Women’s Open sectional qualifier in Scottsdale, Ariz. Kim, now living in Chandler, Ariz., had a 36-hole total of 145 and was fifth. Kono, a LPGA rookie, was at 146. The top four got in. Honolulu’s Ayaka Kaneko, also a rookie on the LPGA, missed out on qualifying in Florida.

» Entry forms are out for the Barbers Point Invitational, July 12-14. Friday is the first day they will be accepted. The cost is $135 for the military and $150 for others. To request a form, email bptinv@gmail.com.

» The annual Pua Melia Invitational has been put back on the Hawaii State Women’s Golf Association schedule. The 35th annual Pua Melia will be July 19-20 at Olomana Golf Links. The entry fee is $165 and the deadline is July 1. For information, call 368-5600 or 223-5726.
