The magical experience begins as you walk along the Pixie Dust Trail, enticed by the happy tunes, colorful displays and enchanted trees. The trail is "colored blue to indicate that something magical will happen along the path," according to Stacha Conboy, district manager for Disney Store. "The magic starts when you walk through the door."
One lucky child is chosen to "unlock imagination" with an oversize lock and key at a daily opening ceremony at the new Disney Store in Ala Moana. The child also receives a replica key to take home. The ceremony takes place at 9:30 a.m. Mondays to Saturdays and at 10 a.m. Sundays.
The store, which was relocated across from Victoria’s Secret, celebrates with a grand opening celebration today.
The newly designed store is the perfect spot to get a Disney fix and some playtime with the kids, especially if you can’t make it to the theme parks. The adults wandering around the store wore mouse ears, enjoying the magical experience themselves.
The painted skyline around the store features familiar local sites with favorite Disney characters — the ‘Iolani Palace Gazebo with Prince Charming and Cinderella, Buzz Lightyear and Woody at the Kamehameha Statue, Ariel and Prince Eric at Aloha Tower.
COME ON IN Disney Store’s grand opening: The first 500 people will receive a free gift.
>> Where: Ala Moana Center, Sears wing, Level 2 >> When: 9:30 a.m. today >> Other events: Meet-and-greet with Mickey and Minnie Mouse at Centerstage at 2 to 6 p.m. Bring your own camera.

Hundreds of folks waited in line to get a sneak peek at the store at its soft opening Wednesday. Honolulu resident Rebecca Johnson stopped by the store with her two children, Silas, 7 and Nevaeh, 4.
Johnson recalled the old store being "cold and reminiscent of an outlet store," and appreciated the new look. "It’s classic, fun and interactive," she said. "It’s got the Disney fun and magic back." Silas enjoyed crawling through a toy tunnel that made noise as others pressed the buttons on the display. He said the store was "really awesome."
No castle is complete without a magic mirror, and the focal point of the store is no exception. Classic fairy tales spring to life as the voices of princesses Ariel, Belle, Cinderella, Aurora, Snow White and Tiana echo in the castle via film clips projected in the fantasy looking-glass.
And it’s not all princesslike and just for the girls. There’s a large "Cars" and "Toy Story" section for the boys. And, since Disney acquired Marvel, there’s an extensive selection of "Avengers" products, including Thor’s hammer, Captain America’s shield and oversize Hulk hands.
The theater, where keiki can watch clips of their favorite movies or listen to tunes from their favorite music videos, also serves as a community center.
Wednesday’s activities included trivia sessions, a "Hot Dog" song gathering where kids learned song lyrics and dance movements, and a lesson in how to draw Mickey Mouse.
"It’s a place where parents and kids can come together and take a break," Conboy said. A weekly list of activities is posted on a board in the front of the store.
For collectors a special "Hawaii-only" section features products like characters with aloha attire, collectible pins and a Vinylmation Mickey Mouse (part of the anime-inspired collectible figures collection), that are only available at the local store. "These items aren’t shipped. People need to come to Hawaii to purchase them," Conboy said.
In Hawaii, experiencing the changing of the seasons is a fantasy, too. The store is outfitted with high-tech translucent trees that serve as movie screens and will change colors with the passing months.
Disney fans will delight in the opportunity to search for hidden Mickeys in the trees. "The Mickeys are hard to find even for the adults," but she added, "They threw in one easy one so we would have hope."
