Lake Wilson signs warn of possible sewage
Signs have been posted at Lake Wilson in Wahiawa warning people to stay out of the water because of the possible discharge of partially disinfected sewage Thursday.
The signs are posted as a precautionary measure, the state Health Department said.
The city notified the Health Department’s Clean Water Branch of a four-second power flicker at 4:12 p.m. Thursday that may have caused ultraviolet disinfection levels to be less than normal on about 14,000 gallons of secondary-treated effluent from the Wahiawa Wastewater Treatment Plant.
The public is advised to remain out of the waters until the signs have been removed.

Support ending for telescopes
The United Kingdom’s Science and Technology Facilities Council said it will end operation of two telescopes on Mauna Kea in coming years.
The council said it will no longer support the United Kingdom Infrared Telescope at the end of September 2013. It is the world’s largest telescope dedicated solely to infrared astronomy. The neighboring James Clerk Maxwell Telescope will continue operating to the end of September 2014.
In 2009 the council recommended closing both telescopes by the end of 2012, but the council allowed for an extension. The council said if an alternate operator is not found for either telescope, they will be decommissioned.

Flyaway roof hits power lines
The Maui Fire Department said strong wind blew a corrugated metal roof against a Kihei home Thursday, causing some downed power lines and nearly $30,000 in damage. No one was hurt.
Fire officials said the roof was from a 30-by-40-foot container at a tour bus service base yard. The base yard sustained about $25,000 in damage.
