Volunteers needed to staff polling places
The Kauai County clerk’s office is seeking people to work in polling places during the Aug. 11 primary election and the Nov. 6 general election.
The jobs are classified as volunteer positions, but participants will receive an $85 honorarium for each full day of work.
"Precinct officials and other election day officials who volunteer to provide voting services to the public are vital to our democracy, and we sincerely appreciate the commitment and sacrifice that they demonstrate in order to ensure voters are able to exercise their right to vote," County Clerk Ricky Watanabe said in a news release.

Wildlife refuge will let visitors explore for free
Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge on Kauai will waive entrance fees on Saturday in observance of Get Outdoors Day, the park announced.
Rangers and volunteers will help visitors learn about Hawaiian wildlife. There will be a ranger-led activity for children from 11 a.m. to noon. On-site parking is limited and visitors are encouraged to carpool.
"Get Outdoors Day is the perfect start to summer," Shannon Stutzer-Smith, manager of the Kauai National Wildlife Refuge Complex, said in a news release.
"The free day affords local families and visitors alike an exciting opportunity to make a trip to the refuge, learn about wildlife and connect with nature."
Stutzer-Smith also said Kilauea Point, "with its dramatic backdrop of steep cliffs plunging to the ocean, is one of the best places in the main Hawaiian Islands to view seabirds."
