GLOBE TROTTING
Napa’s Inglenook winery reborn
Rutherford, Calif. » Film director Francis Ford Coppola ("The Godfather" films and "Apocalypse Now") has reassembled the historic Inglenook winery in Napa Valley and restored the name to the historic property, which is open to the public for tours and wine tasting.
Gustave Niebaum, a Finnish ship captain, founded the original Inglenook in 1880. The property was broken up and the label name sold in the 1960s. Coppola and his wife began purchasing pieces of the property in 1975, and within two decades had reassembled nearly the entire Inglenook property.
It would not be until 2011 that Coppola was able to purchase the Inglenook brand name.
The public can visit the historic Chateau free of charge and go to the nearby Bistro for wine tasting or wine by the glass. For those seeking a deeper look, Inglenook offers a variety of tours, including tastings.
Reservations for tours and the Bistro are suggested. Reservations are mandatory for groups of more than nine. Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily at 1991 St. Helena Highway, Rutherford, Calif. Call 800-782-4266 or visit inglenook.com.
Smog plagues Sequoia forest
SEQUOIA NATIONAL PARK, Calif. » The Sierra Nevada forest that is home to the biggest and oldest living things on Earth — the giant Sequoia redwoods — also suffers a dubious distinction. It has the worst air pollution of any national park in the country.
Mountaintops that should offer awe-inspiring views of California’s geologic grandeur often are muddled by a disorienting gray soup of smog.
The pollution comes from the San Joaquin Valley, one of the worst air basins in the country.
Ozone is weakening many of the park’s Jeffrey and ponderosa pines, leaving telltale yellowing of their long needles. Weakened trees are more susceptible to drought and pests. Scientists say the long-term impact on the redwoods is unclear.
