New Edition goes old school with 30th-anniversary concert
Has it really been three decades since the smooth vocal group New Edition had its first big hit with "Candy Girl"? If your dad waxes nostalgic for those old joints like "Is This the End," "Popcorn Love," "Cool It Now" and "Mr. Telephone Man," then you can make him a happy man with the gift of tickets for the group’s 30th-anniversary world tour stopover Father’s Day at Blaisdell Arena. The original gang — Bobby Brown, Johnny Gill, Ricky Bell, Michael Bivins, Ronnie DeVoe and Ralph Tresvant — is back together and likely will mix in songs the guys made famous as solo acts, including Brown’s "My Prerogative," Gill’s "My My My," Tresvant’s "Sensitivity" and Bell Biv DeVoe’s "Poison," with New Edition hits.
Tickets for the June 17 show are $45-$150 at the Blaisdell box office and Ticketmaster outlets, by phone at 800-745-3000 and online at ticketmaster.com.

Promote peace and fight thirst with nuke-inspired bottle opener
Every time I crack open a cold beverage with my Beers Not Bombs bottle opener, I’m toasting peace. The bronze-alloy keychain opener is fashioned out of metal recycled from disarmed nuclear weapons systems by the California company From War to Peace. The nonradioactive material is made from the copper cables that connected U.S. missiles to distant triggers. The company says its "Peace Bronze" bottle openers "can change our world one beer at a time." They come in a variety of styles starting at $14.95 at www.beersnotbombs.com.

Koa wood, Kauai tobacco add richness to humidor, cigars
If the hard-working dad in your life finds sweet release at the end of the day in a fine cigar, then help set him free in style with a curly koa humidor from Martin & MacArthur. The desktop humidor is lined with Spanish cedar to maintain proper moisture levels while imparting a woodsy aroma. The humidifying element uses distilled water — no batteries or electricity required. It’s sold only at the Ala Moana Center store for $750. Also new for Father’s Day, Martin & MacArthur is introducing its exclusive Makaleha cigars, handmade on Kauai with Kapaa-grown tobacco. Cigars, sold at all stores, begin at $17.90 each and are available in packs of three, six or 20.

Scotch whisky promises to be smoky and silky
Raise a glass to the old man with a bottle of Ardbeg Uigeadail single-malt Scotch whisky, distilled on the remote Scottish isle of Islay. Whiskey is foreign territory for me, but the maker of this highly rated brand boasts of its "deep, rounded chocolate-caramel" aroma with "sherry notes" and smoky flavor with a "silky mouth feel." All of that doesn’t come cheap: A bottle will run you $93 on sale, while supplies last, at the Liquor Collection at Ward Warehouse. Call 524-8808.

Dad can hit the links and root for UH with logo-emblazoned golf balls
Give dad a prescription for fun this Father’s Day with an oversize pill bottle of three University of Hawaii logo-emblazoned golf balls. Paired with a gift certificate for your local golf course or driving range, this would make a nice "thank you" to Dad for all the home repairs and afternoon baseball practices he’s endured over the past year. The set is $10 at Rainbowtique in Ward Centre, the Waikiki Beach Marriott and the Manoa campus bookstore; visit www.uhrainbowtique.com.
