Maui dancer to study at Moscow’s Bolshoi Ballet
Maui teenager Jade Direnfeld is one of 15 young Americans to be selected to study at the renowned Bolshoi Ballet Academy in Moscow this summer.
Direnfeld, 16, is studying dance at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts. On Maui, she attended Seabury Hall and studied at the Maui Academy of Performing Arts.
She will be attending the Bolshoi on a program sponsored by the New York-based Russian American Foundation and funded by the State Department’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.
The six-week program includes study in Russian language and culture, as well as ballet. Direnfeld will also receive three weeks of intensive ballet training in New York City with the Bolshoi Ballet Academy Summer Intensive program, another project sponsored by the Russian American Foundation.
Crowded Saturday market tries for calmer Tuesdays
If the farmers market on Saturdays at Kapiolani Community College is too crowded to enjoy, you might want to explore a scaled-back version that will debut from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday.
The Hawaii Farm Bureau Federation and KCC officials said they decided to launch the weeknight event after community discussions in support of an alternative market. The weekly Tuesday market, to be tested for three months, "is designed to be smaller than the Saturday market, allowing the community to shop at a more leisurely pace with benefit of great food for dinner," federation President Dean Okimoto said in a news release.
The Saturday event will continue to operate from 7:30 to 11 a.m.
