Shooting Bambi from the air not OK?
Aerial hunting of wildlife might be supported by the likes of Sarah Palin, but it is frowned upon by the Hawaii County Council, which has approved a bill to outlaw the eradication of animals by shooting them from the air.
The Council unanimously approved a bill to ban "the eradication of any animal for any reason while being transported by helicopter, airplane or any other similar means," the Hawaii Tribune-Herald reports.
"If you guys take helicopters and gun everything down," one man testified, "there’s going to be nothing to eat."
Unless vetoed by the mayor, the measure could ban aerial animal shooting by people like the former Alaska governor, but may not be enforceable against the state, which is considering the practice to control overgrowing populations like the axis deer, the county’s corporation counsel told the Council.
Manoa library finally back on line
If you’re a public library fan, it’s probably all you can do to contain your excitement. If you’re a library fan in and around Manoa, well, we’ll see you at today’s opening of the new Manoa Public Library.
After three years and $10.3 million, the permanent library returns, and it’s loaded with bells and whistles: four times bigger, more computers and free Wi-Fi, covered parking, state-of-the-art "green" features like solar panels and rainwater catchment irrigation.
The bigger facility means three times more materials to peruse and borrow, such as CDs, DVDs and books, glorious books. It’s good to see public funds go toward enrichment of the mind. Remember, kids, literacy is very cool. And for the grown-ups: Think of the library as a sit-awhile coffee shop, only without the coffee.
