Lahaina blaze burns acreage
A 4-acre brush fire burned on Maui Saturday near Lahaina Cannery Mall and UH-Maui College’s Lahaina Education Center.
The fire at 60 Kenui St. was reported just after 3 p.m. and was brought under control by county firefighters at 7:45 p.m.
No injuries were reported. The cause has not yet been determined.
Firefighters were assisted by personnel from Goodfellow Bros., West Maui Land and the Maui County Public Works Department.
Charter school names director
Laupahoehoe Community Public Charter School has named David Rizor director of operations effective July 1 as the school converts to charter status.
Rizor, former director of the Volcano School of Arts and Sciences, is expected to develop an innovative, project-based learning curriculum.
He is committed to community involvement and collaboration in shaping the school’s culture, according to a school news release.
Saddle Road to be discussed
The state Department of Transportation will hold a public informational meeting Thursday to brief the North Hawaii community on the environmental impact statement for the proposed Saddle Road Extension Project.
The meeting will be from 6 to 8 p.m. at Waikoloa Elementary and Middle School, 68-1730 Hooko St.
The project will extend Saddle Road from Mamalahoa Highway to Queen Kaahumanu Highway. The goal is to move traffic more efficiently, improve safety and support the needs of commercial truck and military traffic, a state news release said.
The comment period for the environmental review ends June 22.
