Girl struck by rock is in critical condition
A 12-year-old girl was taken the Queen’s Medical Center in critical condition Monday morning after she was struck on the head by a rock while on a hike in Mokuleia near YMCA Camp Erdman.
The girl was with a group of hikers originating from Erdman. The group was getting a safety briefing at the base of a cliff between Mokuleia and Kaena Point known as the "Climbing Wall" when the rock struck her head and knocked her unconscious at about 10:30 a.m., said Capt. Terry Seelig, Honolulu Fire Department spokesman.
The girl had not yet put on any gear and did not have a helmet on, Seelig said.
Emergency medical personnel and firefighters put her in a stretcherlike basket, and she was taken by helicopter to a landing zone at Camp Erdman. An ambulance then took her to the hospital.
A crisis counselor was sent to the scene by the American Red Cross Hawaii Chapter to speak to camp counselors and youths.
Fire does $400,000 damage to Mililani L&L
A fire caused about $400,000 in damage to the Mililani Marketplace branch of L&L Drive-Inn shortly after closing Sunday night.
A Honolulu Fire Department investigator determined the fire was unintentionally started at about 9:10 p.m. after workers left the grill on. Heat from the grill ignited grease along the backsplash, said Capt. Terry Seelig, HFD spokesman.
Flames went up into the range hood and onto the roof of the building. An adjoining Safeway was evacuated for about 90 minutes due to smoke, Seelig said.
Waipahu arson might be linked to burglary
Police are investigating a fire that may been started early Monday morning to cover up a burglary at a Waipahu landscape and maintenance company.
Capt. Terry Seelig, Fire Department spokesman, said the alarm was turned in at 2:55 a.m. at the business in the 94-000 block of Farrington Highway. Two pickup trucks were on fire in a fenced area, and firefighters were forced to cut a fence to get to the fire, Seelig said.
After the fire was extinguished at 3:30 a.m., investigators discovered that several other trucks and a shipping container had been broken into. Flammable liquids had been poured over the two trucks to start the fire, Seelig said.
Damage to the two trucks was estimated at $9,000.
