Event celebrates Filipino center’s 10 years
The Filipino Community Center in Waipahu is celebrating its 10th anniversary this week.
The center’s bamboo instrument band, the Banda Kawayan, and the choral and dance troop Himig ng Indak will perform at an open house that begins at 4 p.m. Friday. The theme of the open house is celebration and thanks.
The facility is the largest Filipino community center outside of the Philippines. The three-story building includes a technology center and art gallery and has a tile roof inspired by Spanish architecture which evokes old Manila.
Free recycling of electronics offered on Kauai
Kauai residents and businesses may drop off obsolete and unwanted electronic items at designated locations this month, according to a county news release.
Among the items that will be accepted for recycling are computers, fax machines, laptops, printers, radios, stereo equipment and TV sets.
The recycling events are:
» Monday and June 19, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Kauai Mini-Golf, Kilauea, in the lower parking lot.
» June 20-21, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Eleele Shopping Center parking lot.
» June 22-23, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Vidinha Stadium parking lot.
The county is working with Pacific Corporate Solutions and Sims Recycling Solutions to offer the free service. Visit www.kauai.gov/recycling or call the County Recycling Office at 241-4841.
Firefighters save Floridian injured at Secret Falls
A 75-year-old woman was taken to a Kauai hospital Monday afternoon after sustaining an arm injury at Secret Falls, also known as Uluwehi Falls, in Wailua, according to a Kauai County news release.
Her condition was not available.
The Hobe Sound, Fla., woman was on a guided kayak and hiking tour.
Four Kapaa firefighters and four rescue specialists hiked in about two miles to Secret Falls, where they treated and placed the victim in a litter, the news release said. They wheeled her to Kamokila Village, where other firefighters removed the woman from the litter, placed her on a gurney and then into an ambulance that went to Wilcox Hospital.
