Question: Has the city ever considered placing the application form for a Hawaii driver’s license online? It would certainly save a lot of time if one could download and complete the form in advance.
Answer: The city is moving to make the application available online this year.
It’s a matter of making sure that everything is in compliance with federal and state motor vehicle laws, said Dennis Kamimura, administrator of the city Motor Vehicle & Licensing Division.
“We hope to implement the online fillable form before the end of this year,” he said.
The city’s driver’s licensing information can be found online at www1.honolulu.gov/csd/vehicle/dlicense.htm.
More on Shredding and Recycling
Rene Mansho says she is no longer the contact person for the Aloha Aina Earth Day recycling events for Schnitzer Steel (Kokua Line, June 13), after her position was eliminated in January.
But she’s been busy — as a volunteer — organizing other recycling events, which often include free shredding of confidential documents.
“Schools asked me to help them with their recycling projects, and we formed ‘Going Green,’ another recycling community event which is bigger and better,” she said. “Most Aloha Aina schools are now doing Going Green.”
The next event is scheduled for 8 a.m. to noon Saturday at McCoy Pavilion, Ala Moana Beach Park. Proceeds will help fund the Honolulu Police Department’s Weed & Seed programs.
Items being accepted at this event include one TV per car; computers, printers and scanners; cellphones, printer cartridges, PDAs, etc.; HI-5 beverage containers; corrugated cardboard and newspapers; plastic bags; phone books and magazines; used eye glasses and hearing aids; incandescent light bulbs in exchange for CFLs; prom dresses, business suits and accessories; pet food towels and blankets; and white socks for Afghanistan.
Also being accepted are documents for shredding, with the first box free and a $5 charge for the second and third boxes. You are also asked to bring any canned goods to support the Hawaii Food Bank.
The following items will not be accepted: tires, paint, batteries, microwave ovens, scrap metal, motor oil and hazardous fluids.
Other scheduled Going Green events for 2012 are: June 30, Kapolei High School; July 7, East-West Center/University of Hawaii; July 14, Aiea Community Association at Alvah Scott Elementary School; July 21, K.E.Y. Project at Kahaluu Regional Park; Aug. 4, Oahu Veterans Center Family Day; Aug. 25, McKinley High; Sept. 15, HPD’s District 3 Project C.L.E.A.N. at Waipahu Intermediate School; Sept. 29, ‘Iolani School; Oct. 6, Waialua Community Association; Oct. 20, Kaimuki High; Nov. 3, Campbell High and Dec. 1, Kapolei High.
Items accepted will differ at each event.
At this point, free shredding will be available only at the June 16, Aug. 25, Sept. 15, Sept. 29, Nov. 3 and Dec. 1 events.

To the many, many volunteers at the Special Olympics held Memorial Day weekend at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. Athletes from across the state competed in power lifting, softball, track and field and swimming. It couldn’t have happened without the volunteers who served as officials, timers, escorts, awards presenters and, most importantly, supporters. My daughter has participated in the Special Olympics for several years. The games are always positive, exciting places for athletes with intellectual disabilities to compete, shine and be acknowledged for their athletic endeavors.
