The Coast Guard says seven people were rescued after their ship issued a distress signal in a remote part of the Pacific Ocean west of Hawaii.
Petty Officer 3rd Class Anthony L. Soto said Thursday a nearby ship — the Forestal Diamante — rescued all seven people from the Golden Eagle II about 300 miles northwest of Johnston Atoll.
They were found floating in a life raft.
Soto said the Coast Guard heard reports the Golden Eagle had a fire, but it has not been confirmed as the cause of the emergency. The vessel is now listing on its side.
The Golden Eagle began sending distress signals from a radio beacon at 4 a.m. A C-130 aircraft left Barbers Point at 8 a.m. and arrived at the ship’s last known location about 10:30 a.m. The Forestal Diamante also diverted to the scene.
At 10:43 a.m., the air crew spotted a life raft and saw one person aboard. The Forestal Diamante recovered from the raft all seven mariners aboard the Golden Eagle, the Coast Guard said.
