73 UH athletes earn WAC all-academic
Seventy-three University of Hawaii student-athletes were named academic all-Western Athletic Conference, the conference announced Wednesday.
The list includes student-athletes in spring sports as well as freshmen and transfers from all sports.
Among those honored were 19 women’s track and field athletes, nine softball players and eight baseball players.
To be eligible, a student-athlete must have completed at least one academic year, have at least a 3.00 cumulative grade-point average and have participated in at least 50 percent of the team’s contests.
Oda, Hattori qualify for Junior Amateur
John Oda and Richard Hattori, both of Honolulu, earned the two qualifying spots at the USGA Junior Amateur qualifier held Wednesday at Wailea’s Old Blue Course on Maui.
Oda shot a 7-under 65 to finish at 9-under 135. Hattori, the first-round leader, shot 1-under 71 to finish at 139.
Both earn spots to the national championship to be held at The Golf Club of New England in New Hampshire on July 16-21.
Kailua’s PJ Samiere (68—140) and Honolulu’s Skye Inakoshi (70—142) earned first and second alternates.
Fujikawa shoots 73, tied for 73rd
Moanalua High alum Tadd Fujikawa shot a 2-over 73 Wednesday and is tied for 73rd among 138 golfers at the eGolf Tour’s Spring Creek Classic in Gordonsville, Va.
Travis Ross (Minnesota), Adam Mitchell (Georgia) and Zack Schnurr (Canada) share the lead at 6-under 65.
Gatorade awards Kapolei’s Ioane
Recent Kapolei High School graduate Charlinda Ioane received the 2011-12 Gatorade Hawaii Girls Track and Field Athlete of the Year, becoming the first Hurricane athlete to be chosen for the award.
The 5-foot-10 athlete bound for the University of Hawaii captured the state championship in the shot put last month with a state-record throw of 45 feet, 93⁄4 inches.
Ioane mainted a B-average while donating time to the Special Olympics, Girls Scouts of the United States of America and community service events.
