More than 150,000 books and other materials will fill McKinley High School’s cafeteria starting today for the Friends of the Library of Hawaii book sale.
In its 65th year, the book sale opens to the public today at 9 a.m. and runs through July 1.
Dozens of volunteers spent five days setting up and will continue to help by running the sale, said Warren Hamamoto, one of three co-chairmen.

Monday to Thursday: 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Friday: 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., lanai sale
June 30: 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., all books 50 percent off
July 1: 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., all books 50 cents

On average, the sale brings in a little more than $110,000 and event organizers expect to get about the same this year.
Hawaii-based publishing company Bess Press donated 11,000 books to this year’s sale.
With a large inventory comes a large crowd, and event organizers are advising people to come early if they want first pick. There will be a variety of books to choose from, from popular children’s books to old, out-of-print Hawaiiana books.
To help schoolteachers from kindergarten through 12th grade with supplying books for their classrooms, the Friends of the Library will be offering 25 percent off total purchases from Monday through Friday. The discount also applies to state library system staff members and military service members.
On the last day, all books will be 50 cents.
The event helps support the Friends of the Library of Hawaii, which provides funding for Hawaii’s 50 public libraries’ special programs, technology upgrades and continuing education for library staff.
It is the largest fundraiser for the Hawaii State Public Library System.
