The Pillbox makes refilling prescriptions a treat
I used to dread refilling prescriptions. It seemed like there was always some sort of mistake. Then I switched to the Pillbox in Kaimuki. The pharmacy is an anachronism; it’s small, family-run and personal. Pharmacist Stuart McElhaney is so approachable, I feel like I have an extra doctor looking out for me. The chain stores just can’t compete on customer service. And if there’s no drug for what ails you, you can get a fresh scoop of ice cream. Find it at 1133 11th Ave., or call 737-1777.

Reprinted comic book introduces Spider-Man’s nemesis, The Lizard
Spider-Man was one of the original antiheroes. He was normal and then he got superpowers, but he still had problems like how to pay for rent and food. "The Amazing Spider-Man" movie that opens July 3 resets everything and brings out The Lizard. Priced at only $2.96 at Walmart, I couldn’t resist picking up this special reproduction of the original Spider-Man comic book that introduced the reptilian villain. The package also comes with a bonus DVD featuring a scene from the new movie.

Upgrade homemade sweets with ‘Star Wars’ stencils
I can whip up a decent dinner and I delight in baking up batch after batch of Christmas cookies. But when it comes to birthday cakes, it’s Costco or catastrophe. Cupcakes simplify things considerably, but I’m still left to make them look special enough for the occasion. These Star Wars cupcake stencils from Williams-Sonoma take homemade to another level. Rest the domed stencil over the frosted cupcake, then sprinkle powdered sugar or cocoa powder over the design and voila! You have cupcakes emblazoned with Darth Vader, Stormtrooper, Yoda or the "Star Wars" logo. A set of four stencils is $9.95 at the Ala Moana store; phone 951-0088.

Indian printing blocks combine art and decor
Spotted at Chai Studio at 675 Auahi St. (536-4543) — wall decor that multitasks. Wood printing blocks used in India to design batik fabric provide an exotic, rustic touch as a home accent with intricate carvings worthy of living-room wall display. Averaging about $45 apiece, you get three things for the price of one:
» A wood carving that serves as art. The handle protrudes about an inch from each block, and could be used to anchor it to the wall, making it appear to float and cast shadows.
» A stamp for crafting your own wrapping paper.
» More ambitious DIYers can use it to stamp an accent wall with patterns, vis-a-vis wallpaper.
Each rosewood block measures about 6 by 8 inches and no two are alike. Display them in a group for a gallery effect. One customer purchased five to hang in a row in place of a headboard. But even just one placed on a stark wall should satisfy a minimalist with its intrigue.
