56 fugitives arrested during 5-day sweep
Federal, state and county law enforcement officers arrested 56 people during a five-day roundup of fugitives that ended Sunday.
The arrests were the result of a cooperative effort by 20 officers of the U.S. Marshals Service Adam Walsh Task Force, Hawaii Fugitive Task Force, the state Sheriffs Office and the Honolulu prosecutor’s office.
The U.S. Marshal’s Office said 74 felony warrants were cleared. The felony arrest warrants involved crimes such as assault, robbery, burglary, theft, weapons violations, drug offenses and probation and parole violations.
Texan dies after snorkeling with tour group
A visitor from Texas died Sunday after snorkeling with a tour group off the Kohala Coast, Hawaii County police said.
Police identified the victim as Sokoon Yu, 71, of Flower Mound, Texas.
Yu had been snorkeling with a tour group near a resort on the 74-5000 block of Queen Kaahumanu Highway when she became unresponsive about 10 a.m. Sunday, police said.
Workers from the tour group pulled her from the water, performed CPR and took her to shore. Hawaii County Fire Department personnel continued CPR and took her to North Hawaii Community Hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 7:55 p.m., police said.
An autopsy will be conducted.
Woman killed cycle crash near Kaunakakai
A 33-year-old motorcyclist died in a crash Saturday near Kaunakaki, Maui County police said.
Police identified the victim as Cami Naehu.
Police said Naehu was driving a 2002 Honda CBR600F4i motorcycle east on Kamehameha V Highway, 4.4 miles east of Kealanui Ohina Place, when she crossed into the westbound lane and onto the westbound shoulder at 4:47 p.m.
The motorcycle went up a small berm and hit a tree, and Naehu was thrown from the motorcycle, police said. Naehu was taken to Molokai General Hospital and was pronounced dead at 7:14 p.m.
Police said she was wearing a helmet and that they were investigating whether speeding and alcohol contributed to the crash.
It was the 15th traffic fatality in Maui County this year. compared with six at this time last year, police said.
