After its first absence since 1964, the venerable Rainbow Classic returns to the University of Hawaii men’s basketball schedule this season.
The Outrigger Hotels Rainbow Classic, Nov. 9 and 11-12 at the Stan Sheriff Center, will open the 2012-13 season for the Rainbow Warriors.
The Rainbow Classic had been a mainstay of the UH schedule for 47 years until last season, when a series of scheduling problems forced cessation of the event.
“We can’t wait to start our season and tip it off once again with a tournament that has been such an island tradition,” UH coach Gib Arnold said in a statement.
UH, which was 16-16 last season, will play Maryland-Eastern Shore (7-23), Arkansas-Pine Bluff (11-22) and Houston Baptist (10-20) over the course of the tournament, which sandwiches the Nov. 10 football game with Boise State.
The remainder of the schedule will be announced later, an athletic department spokesman said.
In addition to debuting in the Big West Conference, UH is expected to host Illinois and play a nonconference game at Nevada-Las Vegas.
