Oride takes route 66 for Barbers Point lead
Cory Oride shot a 6-under 66 to grab a two-shot lead over Jonathan Ota after two rounds of the Barbers Point Invitational at the Barbers Point Golf Course on Friday.
Oride’s two-round total is 137, with Ota, who shot a 5-under 67 on Friday, at 139. Alika Bell (70) is at 141.
First-round co-leader Matthew Ma shot a 72 and is at 142. Kalena Preus shot 72—143. Brent Grant, who shared the first-round lead at 70, shot a 76 on Friday.
The tournament continues today and ends Sunday.
Koga finishes third at Junior World golf
Moanalua senior Eimi Koga earned her third consecutive top-three finish at the Callaway Junior World Golf Championships on Friday in San Diego.
The 2011 state high school champion tied for third in the girls 15-17 division at Torrey Pines North. She also took third last year and won the 13-14 division in 2010.
Koga closed with a 1-over-par 73 for a 288 total, finishing eight shots out of first.
Punahou freshman Allisen Corpuz (72—294) tied for 11th and senior Brittany Fan (75—297) tied for 20th.
High school juniors John Oda (Moanalua) and Donny Hopoi (Kamehameha) got top-10 finishes in boys 15-17. Oda (74—295) finished fifth, nine shots out of first, and Hopoi (75—297) was eighth.
In the younger age divisions, which finished Thursday, Honolulu’s Rose Huang and Shawn Lu took second and 11th in the girls and boys 13-14s, Evan Kawai tied for seventh in boys 11-12 and Ethan Dezzani earned a share of 12th in boys 9-10.
McLachlin, Mason miss the cut
Hawaii golfers Parker McLachlin and Nick Mason failed to make the cut in the Web.com Tour’s Utah Championship on Friday in Sandy, Utah.
McLachlin, a Punahou alum, shot a 1-under 70 for a two-round total of 2-over 144. Mason, a Leilehua alum, shot his second 73 for a 146 total. The cut was 3 under par.
Surfer Moore wins two heats in France
Hawaii’s Carissa Moore won two heats on Friday during the opening day of the Roxy Pro Biarritz off the coast of France.
Moore, the defending Association of Surfing Professionals world tour champion, posted the highest two-wave score in the first round. She put up a 17.30, outsurfing Justine Dupont of France (14.90) and Sofia Mulanovich of Peru (5.00), advancing directly to Round 3.
"The waves were getting a little better throughout the morning and they’re holding up a little more to allow more turns. It was really fun," Moore said on the ASP website.
Wave heights were 3 to 5 feet; conditions were clean.
Moore then took her Round 3 heat with score of 14.00 and advanced to the quarterfinals.
Hawaii’s Malia Manuel and Coco Ho, meanwhile, each reached Round 4 by placing second in their third-round heats. Ho will face Rebecca Woods of Australia when surfing resumes. Manuel will surf against Paige Hareb of New Zealand.
5 Wahine water polo players honored
Five members of the University of Hawaii Rainbow Wahine water polo team earned All-Academic awards from the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches.
The ACWPC groups its All-Academic awards into three categories: outstanding (3.71-4.0), superior (3.70-3.41) and excellent (3.4-3.20). Amarens Genee, Serena Reid and Emily Scott were named to the outstanding category; Monique Wilson was named in the superior category, and Maile Osborne in the excellent category.
Genee achieved the highest honor for the third year in a row. The native of Gorinchem, Netherlands, is a three-time All-MPSF academic honoree and was an All-MPSF second-team selection this past year after leading the team and ranking second in the conference in goals per match.
Porter homers in Australia loss at worlds
Former University of Hawaii softball player Stacey Porter hit a leadoff home run for Australia, but Japan rallied for a 3-1 win Friday on the opening day of the International Softball Federation Women’s World Fastpitch Championships in Whitehorse, Yukon, Canada.
Former UH pitcher Justine Smethurst gave up three runs in four innings of relief and took the loss for Australia. Current Rainbow Wahine left-hander Kaia Parnaby pitched the seventh inning and struck out two. Former UH infielder Clare Warwick went 1-for-3.
Kristi Yoshizawa, another former UH infielder, went 0-for-2 for Great Britain in a 4-0 loss to Italy.
The reigning world champion U.S. national team opened the tournament with a 7-0 win over Venezuela behind a one-hitter by Keilani Ricketts.
The world championship, held every two years, runs through July 22.
‘Iolani adds trio of coaches
‘Iolani School has named Brent Shimokawa as varsity baseball coach, Carl Rallita as boys varsity volleyball coach and Dan Nishita as its judo coach.
Shimokawa, a 1984 ‘Iolani graduate, was a baseball and softball assistant coach for the Raiders from 1989 to 2009. Shimokawa replaces Jason Arakaki.
Rallita, a Kamehameha alum, served as ‘Iolani boys junior varsity volleyball coach the previous two years. Rallita replaces Mike Among.
Nishita, a 1994 ‘Iolani graduate, was a three-time national judo champion and an alternate in the 1994 Olympic Games in Atlanta. He was ‘Iolani’s assistant coach last season. He replaces Roxanne Shimokawa.
