Hattori, Oda advance at Junior Amateur
Honolulu’s Richard Hattori fired one of 10 sub-par rounds Tuesday to tie for ninth in qualifying for the 65th U.S. Junior Amateur.
Hattori shot a 2-under-par 70 at The Golf Club of New England, in Stratham, N.H. His two-day total of 145 was four back of the tri-medalists.
Honolulu’s John Oda also finished in the top 64 to advance to today’s first round of match play. Oda shot 79 for a 151 total.
Corpuz leads Hawaii golfers at Girls Junior
Punahou freshman Allisen Corpuz led two Hawaii qualifiers at the 64th U.S. Girls Junior, in Daly City, Calif., on Tuesday.
Corpuz tied for 19th in qualifying for match play, shooting 75—152 at Lake Merced Golf Club. Kapolei’s Alexandra Kaui (76—157) was 41st.
Moanalua senior Eimi Koga (79—159) was among 12 tied for 61st, but she failed to earn one of the four spots for match play. Hilo’s Ciera Min (77—162) did not advance.
Honolulu teen picked to attend USTA camp
Honolulu’s Terrance Hirabara was selected by the United States Tennis Association to be one of 36 to attend the 28th annual USTA/NJTL Tennis Leadership Camp in Minneapolis this week. The camp is for youth ages 12-14 who participate in National Junior Tennis and Learning network chapters across the country.
Hirabara, 14, was nominated based on his leadership qualities, academics, tennis skills and extracurricular activities. The all-expenses-paid week-long camp provides attendees with tennis instruction as well as educational and motivational experiences. During the camp, instructors emphasize the importance of individual skill development, physical fitness, proper nutrition and good sportsmanship.
Weaver takes over at KS-Hawaii
Kimo Weaver will replace Bob Wagner as athletic director at Kamehameha-Hawaii.
Weaver was the athletic director at Ka‘u for eight years before moving over to Kamehameha-Hawaii in 2008 as Wagner’s assistant. Weaver was also the school’s head coach for track and field and an assistant coach for the football and wrestling teams.
Wagner announced his retirement in April.
