Nanakuli man killed by bus is identified
The Honolulu Medical Examiner’s Office has identified a 67-year-old Nanakuli man who died after being hit by a city bus Saturday morning on Farrington Highway.
Filipo Tui died from his injuries Saturday at the Waianae Coast Comprehensive Health Center.
Tui, who suffered from dementia, was on the makai shoulder when he wandered into the roadway as a bus was passing him in the town-bound direction near Hakimo Road in Nanakuli at 5:53 a.m., police said.
The bus hit him and he fell backward, hitting his head and causing severe head injuries, police said.
Police said about 15 to 20 people were on the bus at the time. The driver, a 41-year-old woman, stopped and reported the incident.
HFD unable to find cause of Waianae blaze
The cause of a fire that destroyed a Waianae home Saturday night was deemed undetermined by Honolulu Fire Department investigators, a department spokesman said.
The investigation was concluded around 1 p.m. Sunday, Capt. James Todd said.
Three people — a husband and wife in their 50s and a woman in her 80s — were displaced, and Todd said the house is a "total loss."
Firefighters responded at 7:10 p.m. Saturday to the fire in a single-story, four-bedroom home at 86-236 Puhawai Road, he said.
Damage is estimated at $370,000, and the Red Cross is assisting the three residents with food, shelter, clothing and other needs.
