Boyd Gaming reduces Hawaii operations
Boyd Gaming Corp., operator of air charter subsidiary Vacations Hawaii, said Tuesday it cut back on its Hawaii marketing and flights during the second quarter.
The Las Vegas-based company, which operates casinos in Las Vegas, Atlantic City, N.J., the Midwest and the South, saw its stock slide the most in more than two years after earnings and sales fell short of analysts’ estimates.
Shares tumbled 18 percent to $5.48 at the close in New York, the steepest daily decline since October 2009.
Net income was $1 million compared with a $3 million loss in the year-earlier period. Revenue rose 7.1 percent to $615.2 million.
Chief Operating Officer Paul Chakmak said as business trends strengthened in Hawaii, and in an effort to improve company margins, Boyd began pulling back on marketing programs that were put in place last year.
After discontinuing these efforts, however, "it quickly became clear that they are extremely effective in driving business from Hawaii," Chakmak said
"Consequently, we have resumed these programs and are seeing the early signs of recovery," he said. "The region was also affected by a shift in our Hawaiian charter service. In order to run more efficiently, we’ve reduced the number of weekly flights from five to four, lowering our fuel expense and maximizing our use of available seats, without significantly reducing the number of customers flying into Las Vegas. So, we are confident that the shortfall we saw in the second quarter was short term in nature and expect business to stabilize in the third quarter and resume growing in the fourth."
