Victim hit by bus ID’d as Punaluu woman
The Honolulu Medical Examiner’s Office identified the 26-year-old woman who was killed Tuesday night after she ran into the path of a tour bus on Kamehameha Highway near Punaluu as Frances Kvatek.
An autopsy will be conducted today on the Punaluu resident.
Police said paramedics responded to a medical call at the woman’s home on Kamehameha Highway near Haleaha Road about 9:40 p.m. When paramedics arrived, a 26-year-old woman argued with them and her family and ran off the property onto the highway, where she was hit by a tour bus heading toward Kaneohe, police said.
She was pronounced dead at the scene. Police said alcohol was a factor in the crash on the part of the victim.
100-acre wildfire forces evacuation
Police evacuated several homes near Waianae Valley Road on Wednesday after a 100-acre wildfire broke out close to the area where a large wildfire burned last month.
Fire Capt. Terry Seelig said the fire started near a bus turnaround at Haleahi and Waianae Valley roads about 2 p.m.
About 40 Honolulu firefighters responded to the fire with several engines, tankers and a helicopter and had the fire 95 percent contained by 9 p.m., Seelig said.
Federal firefighters were also assisting along with a private helicopter contracted to help, Seelig said.
The fire came as close as 20 to 30 feet to a house, but firefighters were able to stop it.
The wildfire was burning near where a 1,200-acre fire burned in Waianae and Lualualei in early June, Seelig said.
Mo-ped driver critically hurt in collision
One man was in critical condition Wednesday night after his mo-ped collided with a second mo-ped whose rider then fled on Keeaumoku Street, police said.
Police were looking for the second mo-ped driver who was described as a white man in his 40s on a white mo-ped.
Honolulu Police Lt. Robert Towne said that according to witnesses the two men were riding abreast in the makai-bound, far-right lane just before King Street when the victim’s mo-ped wobbled and struck the other mo-ped before crashing on the ground at about 7 p.m. The victim, who is in his early 40s, wasn’t wearing a helmet and was taken to the hospital in critical condition with head injuries, Towne said.
The second driver briefly stopped at the King Street intersection and looked back before fleeing down Keeaumoku. Police opened a failure to render aid case.
Witnesses are asked to call 529-3499.
Police closed the makai-bound lanes of Keeaumoku between Young and King streets to investigate the crash.
