Maryknoll names Furtado, Nishida coaches
Maryknoll filled two coaching positions on Wednesday, naming Chico Furtado the girls basketball coach and putting Toni Nishida in charge of girls volleyball.
Furtado has been a counselor at the school for more than 20 years and won five straight OIA titles as the coach at Kalaheo.
Nishida played volleyball at the University of Hawaii and has coached at Kaimuki, Maryknoll and the Maunalani Volleyball Club over the past 20 years.
Alos combine for 6 golds at USA Judo meet
Honolulu siblings Teshya, Teniya and Javen Alo combined for six gold medals at the USA Judo Junior Olympic National Championships last weekend in Irving, Texas.
Teshya, 14, competed in the 57 kg weight class and picked up golds in the Juvenile B (ages 14-16), IJF-Junior (14-20) and International Juvenile B (14-16) divisions. She also won the Best Technique Award. The incoming freshman at Kamehameha bested Junior Pan-American champ Lauren Baez in the IJF-Junior division, pre-qualifying her for the upcoming Junior World Championships.
Teniya, 12, won the Juvenile A (ages 12-14) bracket and the International Juvenile A group in the 40 kg class. Javen, 8, took the gold in the Intermediate 1 (ages 8-10) division in the 30 kg class.
