UH’s Brown gets nod for Texas hall
University of Hawaii diving coach Mike Brown will be inducted into the University of Texas Women’s Athletics Hall of Honor. Brown coached the Longhorns from 1976 to ’94. He was named National Diving Coach of the Year three times and was part of 14 national championships and 31 conference title teams.
In his time in Austin, Brown coached 28 All-Americans, 18 U.S. national team members and five Olympians. His UT divers won seven NCAA individual titles and 26 conference individual championships. He served as the 1992 U.S. Olympic coach and worked as a U.S. national team coach for 17 years.
Brown came to Hawaii in 2000 and has coached the men’s and women’s diving teams with his wife, Anita Rossing, for the past 12 years. UH divers have earned 28 NCAA All-America honors and two NCAA individual titles — QiongJie Huang (2005) and Emma Friesen (2008). He has been named Western Athletic Conference Diving Coach of the Year seven times.
3 UH athletes chosen as all-academic
University of Hawaii track and field athletes Amanda Alvarez, Madara Apine and Samantha Balentine were selected as U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association all-academic honorees. They were among 676 student-athletes honored during the 2012 season.
The Rainbow Wahine were named an all-academic team by the USTFCCCA. A total of 171 institutions earned the distinction as a result of a cumulative team GPA of 3.00 or better.
Apine and Balentine were also selected to the all-academic team last season.
