Trainer offers advice on eating and shopping
Kroc Center Hawaii personal trainer Ryan Andrews discusses "Eating for a Healthier You," a workshop at 7 p.m. Monday.
Andrews will teach ways to improve eating and exercise habits through dietary guidelines, tips for grocery shopping and dining out, reading food labels and getting the best nutrition from your calories.

Macy’s chef shows extended through to September
Macy’s Ala Moana continues its Hawaii Food & Wine Festival Chef Series at the store’s demonstration kitchen.
Roy Yamaguchi shares his culinary talents at noon Saturday with a lineup of Big Island Kulana beef, sous vide egg, sakura rice and Japanese caviar.
Ed Kenney of town will take the helm Aug. 18, followed by Mark Noguchi of Hanohano He‘eia on Sept. 1. Nancy Silverton of Mozza appears Sept. 8.

Sam Choy shows his chops vying against top chefs
Hawaii chef Sam Choy was named a finalist in Food Network’s "Chopped Grill Masters," beating out three other chefs by whipping up creative dishes from baskets of surprise ingredients.
In an episode that aired Sunday, Choy competed against all three chefs during an appetizer round, making Grilled Prawn with Tomatillo Vinaigrette. After one chef was weeded out, he stayed in the game with an entree of Island Boar Grilled with Spoon Fruit Glaze. His dessert of Cheese Cannelloni Stuffed with Goat Cheese helped nudge him to victory.
The five-part series started with 16 chefs; finalists will vie for a prize of $50,000 on Aug. 19.
"Chopped Grill Masters" airs 6 p.m. Sundays.
Wood Valley wins coffee group’s cupping contest
The Hawaii Coffee Association announced its grand champions at the fourth annual Cupping Competition at Maui Tropical Plantation on July 21.
Wood Valley Coffee Co. from Hawaii island’s Kau district won the commercial category.
Heavenly Hawaiian Farms from Kona took honors in the creative category, which includes coffee using new cultivation or processing methods that aren’t necessarily produced in commercial-level quantity.
Other winners included Tambra Gardens (Maui), Manny’s Brew (Hawaii), Kauai Coffee (Kauai), Coffees of Hawaii (Molokai) and Waialua Estate (Oahu).
Competition seeks sandwiches beyond the expected PB&J
Through Oct. 11, Jif is holding a sandwich contest for children featuring its classic peanut butter and new hazelnut spreads. The top winner will win a $25,000 college fund.
Sandwich recipes submitted to the 11th annual Jif Most Creative Sandwich Contest will be judged on creativity, taste, visual appeal and ease of preparation. Each recipe must use at least two tablespoons of Jif Peanut Butter or Jif Hazelnut Spread.
