Suspect indicted in killing of man at park
An Oahu grand jury on Tuesday indicted Teddy Munet on a charge of murder in the shooting death of his friend William "Billy" Fallau.
City Prosecutor Rodney Veary asked state Circuit Judge Richard Perkins to confirm the $2 million bail already imposed for the 29-year-old Munet, citing Munet’s criminal convictions for car break-in and auto theft, his possible gang affiliations and for the protection of the eyewitness to the murder. Perkins instead reduced the bail to $1 million.
Hikers found Fallau’s body July 19 at the Kawainui State Park Reserve. Fallau, 29, died of a gunshot wound to the back of the neck.
Report pitches site for landfill
Maalo could be the site of Kauai’s next landfill. A consultant’s report for the county says Maalo is the only site identified with a "willing" landowner and is the most economical choice over the 264-year life of the landfill.
However, the Garden Island newspaper reported Tuesday the site has the highest estimated initial cost of all sites, at $38.1 million. The report also says the site has possible wetland features that may require mitigation.
The site is 2.5 miles north of Lihue and is considered centrally located.
