There will be a roster of 100 football players for the start of Norm Chow’s first training camp as Hawaii’s head coach.
The Warriors are scheduled to report this afternoon.
The first practice is set for tomorrow afternoon.
Chow and his staff spent the past two days crafting a roster. Chow would like to cap the roster at 102 players — three fewer than the NCAA limit for training camp.
The 100-player roster includes cornerbacks Ronald Fields and Justin Turner. Both are completing work on associate degrees, which are eligibility requirements for playing this season. If either is deemed eligible, then John Hardy-Tuliau, who was a No. 1 cornerback in spring training, would move to safety.
The Warriors will have seven quarterbacks in camp. David Graves, Jeremy Higgins and Sean Schroeder will compete for the starter’s job. The other quarterbacks are freshmen Ikaika Woolsey and Justin Alo, Ohio State transfer Taylor Graham and Cayman Shutter.
As of now, Graham will redshirt this year in accordance with NCAA transfer rules. Graham has petitioned the NCAA for a waiver that would allow him to play this season.
Shutter will be in camp despite being suspended for the first four games of the season after pleading no contest to a drunken-driving charge.
The Warriors have several walk-ons, including linebacker Josh Donovan, a Mid-Pacific Institute graduate and the son of suspended UH athletic director Jim Donovan.
Brian Hittner, a long snapper from Saddleback College, also was added to the roster. Hittner will serve as the backup to long snapper Luke Ingram.
Beau Yap handled the long-snapping in spring training while Ingram recovered from shoulder surgery. But Yap has emerged as the Warriors’ top pass rusher, and the coaches would prefer that he focus on that.
Chow said further evaluations will be made in the next couple of days. After that, coaches will decide which players will be added to fill out the roster.
