Ex-Bow Wright among deadline deals
Former University of Hawaii pitcher Steven Wright was traded from the Cleveland Indians to the Boston Red Sox in a deal just prior to the Major League Baseball trading deadline on Tuesday.
Wright, 27, had played the entire season for the Akron Aeros in the Double-A Eastern League, where he was 9-6 with a 2.49 ERA in 115 2/3 innings with 101 strikeouts.
He recently transitioned from a conventional pitcher to a knuckleballer and pitched in the league’s all-star game last Month.
The Indians received first baseman Lars Anderson in the deal.
Wright will remain in the Eastern League, playing for the Portland Sea Dogs.
He pitched for the Rainbows from 2004 to 2006, when he was selected in the second round of the MLB draft by the Indians.
In his junior year at UH, Wright was named a second-team All-American by Baseball America and Rivals.com and was the Western Athletic Conference pitcher of the year.
His 123 strikeouts that season are the eighth-most in school history and he also ranks in UH’s top-10 list all-time with a career ERA of 3.12.
BYUH signs players in 2 sports
Aria Agle signed a letter of intent to join the Brigham Young-Hawaii softball program in the fall.
Agle, an outfielder/pitcher, played the past two seasons at Western Nebraska, where she led her team to the National Junior College Athletic Association national championship tournament both times.
In her sophomore season at Western Nebraska, Agle was named to the All-Region First Team.
On the hardwood, the BYUH men’s basketball team signed Cory Lange.
Lange, a 6-foot-2 guard from Tehachapi High (Calif.), will postpone his collegiate career for two seasons while he serves on a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Texas. He plans to begin playing for the Seasiders in the 2014-15 season.
As a high school senior, Lange averaged 25.3 points per game to lead all California Division III players. He also averaged 6.4 rebounds, 4.2 assists and 3.7 steals per game.The Bakersfield Californian named him their player of the year.
Hansen to coach Hawaii-Hilo tennis
Scott Hansen, who has lived in Pahoa since 2007, has been named the men’s and women’s tennis coach at Hawaii-Hilo.
Hansen has more than 24 years of coaching experience and was named the Orange Empire Conference (Calif.) coach of the year twice (2002 and ’04). His teams won five straight conference championships during his tenure.
Hansen played for San Diego State and Saddleback College, where he claimed the California Community College state doubles championship in 1991.
He takes over for Kula Oda, who resigned in May following 14 years at the helm.
Vulcans land 3 volleyball players
Hawaii-Hilo women’s volleyball coach Tino Reyes announced the addition of three players — Joshell Lilio, Bria Morgan and Abbey Wade — on Wednesday.
"(We) added some size and versatility to our program," Reyes said.
At 6-feet, Lilio, a Castle alum, was a gold medalist on the 2011 USA High Performance squad.
Morgan, who is 5-11, was an all-conference and All-Northern California selection at Soquel High.
Wade, a 5-11 junior, started for Western Nebraska last season.
The Vulcans start the season Aug. 30 at home against Augustana College (S.D.)
