Honolulu to host 2013 soccer regional
Honolulu has been awarded a host site of the 2013 U.S. Youth Soccer Region IV (West) Championship.
Regional winners of the Under-13 through Under-19 brackets will earn berths to the 2013 U.S. Youth Soccer National Championships at Overland Park, Kansas.
Matches will be played at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Complex from June 17-23, with the finals being held June 23. Honolulu lasted hosted the regional in 2008.
Chan advances in Western Amateur
‘Iolani graduate Lorens Chan finished stroke play two shots out of first after Thursday’s third and fourth rounds of the 110th Western Amateur Championship at Exmoor Country Club in Highland Park, Ill.
Chan, heading for UCLA on a golf scholarship this fall, advanced to the sweet 16 with rounds of 68-67. Washington All-American Chris Williams earned medalist honors a second straight year with a 72-hole total of 17-under-par 271. Three golfers tied for third, three shots behind Chan.
The final rounds are match play. A field of 156 from 34 states and 11 countries, including six of the world’s Top 10 amateurs, began the tournament.
Corpuz in contention at Junior PGA
Allisen Corpuz climbed into the top 10 with a third-round 68 at Thursday’s 37th Junior PGA Championship at Sycamore Hills Golf Club in Fort Wayne, Ind.
Corpuz is at 1-under-par 215 going into today’s final round, eight shots off the lead. Mariel Galdiano (70—218) is 12th. Both girls will be Punahou freshmen this fall.
John Oda, a Moanalua junior, broke par for the first time and is tied for 20th at 71—220.
Ma, Kuroiwa atop Army leaderboard
Matthew Ma and Ryan Kuroiwa are tied for the lead at 1-under-par 71 after Thursday’s first round of the Army Invitational at Leilehua Golf Course.
Cory Oride is a shot back, and Skye Inakoshi and Bradley Shigezawa are two off the lead.
Raymond Hoffman and Rocky Reed (80) lead A Flight by three strokes; Michael Yanagihashi (80) leads B Flight by two strokes; Al Amii (84) leads C Flight by three strokes, and Shigeru Matsui (78) leads Senior Flight by three strokes.
3 gain induction into Vulcans Hall of Fame
The University of Hawaii-Hilo will induct three individuals into this year’s Vulcans Athletic Hall of Fame.
The honorees are tennis player Randy Kunimoto, basketball player Scott Prather and KTA Super Store President and CEO Barry Taniguchi.
The ceremony will be Aug. 29 at the Naniloa Volcanoes Resort Polynesian Room. Tickets for the event are $50 and can be purchased by calling 974-7700.
Kunimoto, a Vulcan from 1994-97, played first singles and first doubles.
Prather played guard from 1998-2002.
Zepponi named Hilo basketball assistant
Zach Zepponi has been named men’s assistant basketball coach for the University of Hawaii-Hilo.
Zepponi was an assistant at California State San Marcos last season, and previously served as an assistant at Santa Barbara City College. "Zach is familiar with many of the areas we recruit and those players that are there," said Vulcans head coach Jeff Law.
