Case’s funds below Hirono’s and Lingle’s
Former U.S. Rep. Ed Case raised more than $42,000 during the first three weeks of July and had $166,600 in cash on hand for the primary. Case has raised more than $745,200 overall.
U.S. Rep. Mazie Hirono, Case’s opponent in the Democratic primary, and former Gov. Linda Lingle, the leading Republican, disclosed their July fundraising figures earlier last week.
Hirono raised $146,500 in July and more than $3.5 million overall. Lingle raised $171,950 in July and more than $4.4 million overall.
Mars rover landing is focus of event
The Bishop Museum will hold an "Invasion of Mars" night from 6:30 to 10 p.m. Sunday to coincide with the planned landing of the Mars rover Curiosity.
The rover, inside the Mars Science Laboratory now in orbit around the red planet, will attempt a complex descent at 7:31 p.m. Sunday. If everything goes as planned, the museum will show any first pictures sent back by Curiosity. It will also have planetarium programs on Mars and other presentations.
Admission is free for Bishop Museum members, $10 for adults and $5 for kids 4 to 12. The planetarium, observatory and Science Adventure Center will be open that night. Call 847-8203 or visit bishopmuseum.org for reservations.
Abercrombie builds $2.1M war chest
Gov. Neil Abercrombie raised more than $645,100 during the past six months and has collected $2.1 million overall for his re-election in 2014, according to campaign reports filed this week.
The Democrat has built a solid fundraising base for his campaign.
Lt. Gov. Brian Schatz raised more than $80,800 during the past six months and has collected more than $448,000 overall for his re-election campaign.

Learn about new FEMA maps
Maui County is sponsoring a meeting on the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s new digital flood insurance rate maps, which become effective Sept. 19.
Representatives will help residents and business owners understand how the map revisions might affect insurance premiums.
The meeting will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Aug. 13 at Kaunoa West Maui Senior Center, 788 Pauoa St., Lahaina.
