Chan ousted at Western Amateur
Lorens Chan’s run at the 110th Western Amateur Championship ended Friday in the second round of match play.
The ‘Iolani graduate won his morning match against UCLA teammate Pedro Figueiredo, but fell to Dartmouth graduate Peter Williamson in the quarterfinals.
The tournament, which began with 156 players and six of the world’s top 10 amateurs, is being played at Exmoor Country Club in Highland Park, Ill. Chan finished second in the 72-hole qualifying, which cut the field to 16.
Chan defeated Figueiredo on the 20th hole with par in the opening round. The two-time Hawaii state high school champion birdied the last hole of regulation to send it into overtime. Both golfers birdied the 19th hole.
Corpuz, Galdiano finish among top 12
Hawaii’s Allisen Corpuz and Mariel Galdiano both finished among the top 12 at the 37th Junior PGA Championship, which ended Friday at Sycamore Hills Golf Club in Fort Wayne, Ind.
Corpuz and Galdiano both closed with a 2-over-par 74. Corpuz finished at 289, 15 shots behind Ariya Jutanugarn, who successfully defended her title. Galdiano’s 72-hole total was 292.
Both girls will be freshmen at Punahou this fall.
In the boys’ division, state high school champion John Oda, a Moanalua junior, played his final three rounds in 1 under par to finish 20th. He was 17 shots out of first.
Ma holds lead at Army Invitational
Matthew Ma pulled away with a six-shot lead in the Army Invitational at Leilehua Golf Course on Friday.
Ma shot a 3-under 69 in the second round for a total of 140 in the tournament.
Cory Oride (74) and Bradley Shigezawa (73) trail Ma in the Championship Flight.
Wade Nakamura (163) leads A flight by one stroke; William Enomoto (165) leads B flight by two strokes; Al Amii leads C flight by four strokes; and Carl Ho leads the Senior flight by one stroke.
The final round of the Army Invitational begins at 7 a.m. today at Leilehua Golf Course.
